I'm going to get inside the heads of the characters.
First off, let's talk about Mischa Cromwell. I love Mischa, I know everyone hates him, but first off let me explain why I love Mischa so, so much!
While researching this book, you don't know how many people I talked too who told me things like "I lost my virginity and it was a mistake." over and over I heard people tell me about how they mistook sex for love and made choices that weren't kosher. Why did he sleep with Cody? Simple, he was a 17-year-old guy. He did what lots of other young teenagers do, sleep with people they can't be with to feel closer to them. He tried to love Cody. He really did, but in the end he was too selfish and too self-centered to be with her. His entire life revolved around people telling him he wouldn't amount to anything. He believed them. He was so smart, so talented, but so full of self-doubt that it meant nothing.
What if his parents were different? How would he have been different?
